Save your dancing feet and legs choose shoes and socks!

Save your feet & legs....

How many of us dancers pay attention to the part of us that hits the floor?

From talking to most experienced dancers I find out almost all of them consider this one of dancing's priorities. But, for new dancers, often they find out after their feet and legs are hurting.

If you are a new dancer please consider your shoes. Street shoes are only OK to a point. If you wear street shoes, they need to fit well and provide more support than you need while walking.

If the soles were more forgiving we could use an athletic (Sneakers, Tennis, Gym) shoe. Athletic shoes will support you while moving in all directions but the rubber sole makes it virtually impossible and even hazardous while turning.  You can seriously damage your feet and ankles, if you try to turn with rubber-soled gym shoes.

A good quality dance shoe or dance practice shoe is best. They are designed to fit well, provide support, move across the floor, and turn or spin well. Some new styles (Dance Sneakers) look and fit like athletic shoes, but they were designed to move on the dance floor and facilitate turning and spinning. The DanceSport VA studio stocks and sells these and several other types of dance shoes.

There are also a few other places in the area where you can buy off-the-shelf, or order from a catalog. Judy & I don't sell shoes but keep a supply of mail order catalogs with us during our social dances. If you are looking to purchase dance shoes and don't know where to turn, please ask us.

Once you purchase a good pair of shoes you will start to notice the dance floors. All of the studio floors in the area are good wood floors designed to allow free movement and cushion the impact of your feet against the floor. Unfortunately, there are many local dances held on inferior floors.

Many of the private clubs, night clubs and social halls have wood floors and are dirty or heavily waxed (non-slip wax, of course).  Having good shoes on these floors provides no advantage. In fact, you may find that a pair of leather-soled street shoes moves better on these bad-news floors.

Other floors are tile laid on concrete. Even if you can turn well, the floor is very unforgiving on the feet, ankles and knees. If you don't help out your feet and legs they will soon stop helping you.

One more thing.  Buy your shoes a little larger than usual.  Those of you who were "Boy/Girl Scouts," probably remember your Scoutmaster's advice about socks for hiking...  They probably told you to wear two pair of socks; a thin pair on the inside and a thick pair on the outside.  Gentlemen, get ready for a shocking revelation!  You should wear ladies ankle-high stockings underneath your socks.  Ladies, if you wear panty-hose, etc, and don't want to wear socks, you can help your feet by wearing a pair of "footies" (Pick up a handful from your favorite ladies shoe store).  If you don't mind looking like a "dancing geek," wear a pair of ankle-high stockings on the outside of your hose.  Your Scoutmaster knew what they were talking about.  By wearing two pair of socks, you allowed the two materials to "slip" just enough to prevent chaffing and/or blisters on your feet.
