A Man's Dance Frame Affects You and Your Partner

The tip this week is about how a man's moving dance frame affects you and your partner.

When social dancing often you will need to change your body position in relationship to your partner. If the partners are facing each other with bodies parallel then each shoulder is approximately the same distance apart. If you are turned 90 degrees from you partner one shoulder is close and the other far away. Dancing a cross body lead is a good example of when this occurs.

Since the hand and arm are attached to the shoulder you will need to make some adjustments when rotating perpendicular to your partner. A good self demonstration is to take your partner in dance frame and then rotate ccw slowly until you are 90 degrees to your partner. As you rotate your left shoulder moves away from your partner. If you are locked in a rigid frame you will pull your partner toward you. If you release your frame through your left arm your body position will not change your partner's position.
At the same time the lady must also release her frame through the right arm and concentrate on forward movement only.

If the man has trouble releasing his left side then drop the left hand completely. No attachment, no lead. Use the right to lead the move.

A cross body movement should finish with a nice clean pivot step for the lady. If she is already twisted half-way through the movement the finish will look pretty rough. This is a very common dance movement and it is often poorly. With a little practice both partners can make it clean again.
