Two Step Tidewater Virginia Dance Tip

A Practical Exercise in Lead-and-Follow

This is an exercise I use on student dancers that will help all levels of dancers understand lead and follow.

Stand in front of your partner arms length away. Extend your hands, fingers spread and touch fingertips very lightly. This is practiced to a slow Merenque song and both partners must maintain a decent frame. The lady closes her eyes and follows the man as he moves around the floor. As normal, the lady starts with the Right and man with the Left. No one moves until the lady closes her eyes. A light finger tip to finger tip pressure is all that is required. 100% of the time the lady starts moving as the man does and follows his movements perfectly. This even works on brand new dancers.

The lessons learned by this exercise are:
1. Not a lot of pushing, pulling and excess force is required to lead and follow.
2. If the man has too much extra hand movement the lady will become confused as where she is being led.
3. If the woman is not paying attention to the lead she will lose contact and not move where led.
4. Lead and follow cannot be taken for granted. It must be front and center in your social dance.

During this exercise all external distractions are gone and both dancers must pay attention to lead and follow only. If contact is lost the reason becomes readily apparent. I have tried this on many students and found it to be a very practical way to demonstrate lead & follow.
