Two Step Tidewater Virginia Dance Tip

Two Step Tidewater Sunday Dance News

***********************************************************************************************

Don't Dance Together...

Although this sounds contradictory from what you have heard, we are not referring to your rhythm or connection. We are recommending that while dancing each partner is responsible for their own movement.

Keeping this in mind will allow the dance to flow much smoother.

An example used is when either partner is using a passing action to change position. A cross-body lead is the most predominant of these types of movement. If the leader attempts to "move" the follower the pattern is compromised. The pattern should be led. This means to show the follower what you want, then, get out of the way and let her do it.

The basic good lead tells the lady "Go this way"

My description of leading: If you had to direct a lady from one location to another in a city. You both were on foot. You were not allowed to speak or point. You come out of the building and have to turn right and travel to the corner. Would you drag the person the entire length of the block? Would you need to? A good lead starts the lady off in the correct direction then a good follow continues until directed otherwise.

The lead also can be dictated by the "Character of the Dance" An example we use in Two-Step lessons is when the lady has been led to "Free Spin' the character of the dance tells her to stop when facing the man.

Turns should be treated the same. Indicate the type and direction then let her turn. If a lady requires constant pressure to keep turning she will soon wear out her partners. If she doesn't and the man insists on "cranking" her in a circle she will only get knocked off center a few times before she learns... Don't dance with him...

Equally important is for the lady to allow the man to move freely when he needs to. A good rule to keep in mind is "if your partner has the harder movement then you adjust your position to suit."
