Learning to dance (or ride a bike)

Learning to dance (or ride a bike):  When we were starting out how many of us asked the instructor to "Teach us how to dance"???

What do you feel about that question now? Have you every sat down and tried to figure out what it takes to accomplish that?

As dancers and students we need to look at both learning and teaching dance as compared to other activities. If I asked you to write down step by step how to ride a bicycle could you do it well enough to teach someone by your written instruction only? We all know what the answer is but people still want to look at footsteps on a sheet or watch another dancers feet and learn how to dance.

Dancing is like any other activity that requires not only knowledge but skill. Skills are acquired through practice.  We can no more learn how to dance without practice as we can learn to ride a bike, ski, play table tennis, or write our names without practice.

How and when to practice.  Practice dancing alone or with a partner to learn a new pattern, improve your technique or work on a choreographed routine.

You should find a quiet place with a decent floor to practice as this requires lots of repetition.  Don't overlook the hour of "just practice" time on Sunday nights, before the Two Step Tidewater Virginia's scheduled dance.  There is an open dance floor and music - we can accommodate some of your practice music needs, and you may even be able to bring your own music.

While at a social dance practice your lead or follow or your floor craft (ability to move around the floor gracefully without collisions or abrupt moves).  Don't use the social floor to practice new stuff unless there is sufficient room to do so without acting as a road block to other dancers.

When it all adds up your dancing will improve.  You learned to ride a bike by figuring out what made it go, stop and steer; then much practice. In dancing learn the correct technique then be patient and practice.
