Is that a Rumba, a Cha, or an NC2

The Beat tells you (or is it)?

One of my Ballroom teachers from a long time ago would expand the student's musical knowledge by playing music for one dance and getting us to try a different one. For example asking us to Foxtrot to a Rumba. We were forced to listen to the beat not the song. It seemed to be a good way to learn to dance to some popular music that may not be made for Ballroom. Because of that training I still switch over to WCS or Cha in the middle of a Hustle (I don't know much Hustle). Many a Foxtrot song is perfect for WCS and there are lots of Latin songs that will work for either Rumba or Cha.

Although we have the ability to be flexible with those "on the fence" songs, there is some music that is perfect for a dance. We all have heard that perfect bluesy WCS or that great Latin Cha. You feel the beat, the music is so great you can't sit down and you automatically know what to dance.

The truth of the matter is, except in a few rare exceptions (3/4-time waltz, and distinct 8/16 measure Tango Frames, for instance),  most music is just 4/4 time and you can do literally any dance to any music.  It's the style that the artist gives it, the tempo (Beats per minute or Measures per minute), and a lot of intangibles that make that special song what it appears to you.  One rule of the thumb (except when you are competing - you probably shouldn't do that), if you start out as, for instance, a cha cha, and it turns out to be too slow for you, just tell your partner, and switch dances.  That happens all of the time.  Did you ever notice that there are usually many different people on the dance floor, doing different dances to the same song.  Hey!  You can even deliberately change, for your own style - try breaking from a Foxtrot to a WCS or ECS, then back to the Foxtrot - it can add a cool effect to  your own dancing.

So, the point is, what make the music so distinctive. I feel it but can't tell what makes it so danceable. This is a question for you. If anyone can define that something that makes up that great dance song and gives it the dance signature send me an email and I will post it. If you will include your perfect dance song so much the better. I have heard a lot of technical terminology but no down to earth answers.
