Keeping Your Balance

Those who follow my letters already know that this is a favorite subject of mine.  As I get older I find that balance must be earned at a higher price than when I was younger. This got me thinking, again, on what it takes to develop better balance.

If I stand at attention, feet together, and concentrate on my leg and foot muscles, I soon realize which are helping me balance. It only stands to reason that these are the ones I need to strengthen to help me balance. Lift one foot and it become apparent what is happening.

Then try to turn...

Now we begin to realize how important balance is to us dancers. OK, now for the tip. Find a straight line on a floor. A seam or joint will do. Stand on the line with one foot directly in back of the other, toe to heel, perfectly straight ahead, both feet in line. Move your weight forward then back and then centered. Now turn the front of the front foot out slightly at an angle and turn the back foot toe outward, but in the opposite direction and at the same angle. The heels are still on the line but the toes are now turned out.

After comparing your balance both ways you will realize why you need to utilize this in dancing to help keep your balance. I know most of you already know this but the next time you run into a new dancer who is wobbling around show them how it works.

Any other ideas???   Mail it to us:      <<--Return to Dance Tips Menu
