Next time you go out dancing try to think of what it takes to keep us upright and moving around the dance floor. Use your body to DANCE. There is a world of differenced between dancing - and "walking (or hopping) around the dance floor - to music." Most of that difference comes from how you use your body.
Don't misunderstand. I'm not saying it's bad to walk or hop, until you can learn to dance. In fact, that is the only way to start. None of us just stood up and became a world-champion dancer. We all start with walking to music, hopping from time to time, and gradually, learning the body mechanics which separate "dancers" from "beginners."
We begin to learn about "body mechanics" from infancy, so we don't remember the intricacies of learning to stand-alone, walk, and run. They just happened "naturally." For many of us, our body training ends there. A few go on to learn some form of dancing, Karate, or other body training - these usually have a much easier time learning to use their bodies in dancing. For the rest of us, learning to dance, as adults requires extra attention to the body mechanics which came so "naturally," when we were infants.
Most of the time we take our bodies for granted and hope they will last as long as we wish. If we think about how many parts of the body act, react and interact while we are moving it boggles the mind. One of our members, Will Harper, remembers VIVIDLY, from just last year, what it takes to learn to stand-up again, without falling; walk again, without flopping from one foot to another; stand on one foot, then the other, with your eyes closed, and not fall; and finally, finally, to dance again. There are at least a half-dozen other local dancers, who come to mind, who have overcome unbelievable odds, and are dancing again - but only those who were sure that they wanted to dance again! Maybe some of you have experienced this horror in your lives. If you haven't be very grateful.
God gave us a wonderful ability to be able to fine tune our motor skills to the point where dancing is a reality. Never take it for granted as that is when we begin to mistreat this gift.
