Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers... From our Weekly Newsletter

***********************************

Hello Dancers,
Thanks to all the dancers who braved the rain to come out dancing last
Sunday. We had a good sized group and everyone was super happy with the
cooler evening. Judy and I taught a basic Country Two-Step lesson as a warm
up at 6:30 then at 7:00 the real fun started with a great Two-Step pattern.
We will continue this series through July and August. Each week we will
teach the same basic lesson from 6:30 to 7:00 and will cover the same steps
as last week but less technique and more practice. At 7:00 we will teach a
new or recycled two-step move. A review of the previous week will start
things off.

The Song of the week:
This week we are spotlighting a great West Coast Swing song, "Let the Good
Times Roll" that was off Eva Cassidy's first CD. "The Other Side" album is a
collection of duets with Chuck Brown, better known as the Godfather of the
Washington DC go-go sound. Only a few short years later in 1996 Eva passed
away at age 33 from Melanoma. If you like to listen to great songs sung just
a little different, check out some of her albums. On "Let the Good Times
Roll" her voice carries the cut. Chuck Brown adds his own raspy sound but is
not as memorable. "Let the Good times Roll" was originally recorded by
Shirley & Lee in 1956. The song, written by  Leonard Lee, was a big hit for
him and his partner Shirley Goodman. Great song then and great song now. The
good ones just keep getting recycled.
You can dance to this and many other great popular songs each Sunday night
at "A Time to Dance" when we hold our popular social dance.

Dance Web Site of the week
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/dihtml/dihome.html

This is a Library of Congress sponsored site that has available on-line a
collection of historical dance instruction manuals. There are also links to
videos of dancers re-creating historical dances from those manuals. The site
is very extensive and will take many hours to even check out a small section
of the information. It is an interesting site to browse and should be book
marked for future use as a dance reference.

When Traveling:
Each week we receive calls from dancers who are visiting the area and find
our information while searching for places to dance. If you are visiting an
area for the first time, finding a good dance place can be real headache.
Calling every dance club and studio from a hotel room gets expensive and
time consuming. Now, before we leave, we will use a quick couple a resources
available to us. The first source that I use is the toll free number to
USABDA Central. Having used this service I can vouch for it's value. Give
them your destination and they will give you the contact phone number of a
person involved with USABDA in the area. Although geared around Ballroom I
have found that the contact may also have information on Country-Western,
Swing and Latin clubs in their area. The second thing I do is search on
Google for dance places. Type in "Dancing in Charlottesville" and you get
several choices. Do this a week or so in advance and you have time to ask
questions and get replies. Give this a test run now and type in "Dancing in
Virginia Beach" When I arrive I always check the local

OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton Roads, Yorktown, Gloucester, and Williamsburg) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater area dancers.  We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites.  To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz.  Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement.  Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page.  We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page.  Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event.  In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to http://www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails.  (Not just C&W. We'll  include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.)  We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason.  We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
