Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers... From our Weekly Newsletter

***********************************

Hello Dancers,

Thanks again to all the dancers who came out last Sunday and also those who
showed up early for our last Foxtrot lesson. As a reminder, Foxtrot is a
dance that travels around the dance floor. As such, dancers need to heed
the "Rules of the Road" or dance floor etiquette. If you are learning and
moving slowly, dance closer to the center of the dance floor but leave the
center open for those dancing West Coast Swing.

April Dance Lesson Schedule:
April 4th - West Coast Swing, 6:30 - basic, 7pm - Intermediate move
April 11th - Easter Sunday - No Dance
April 18th - WCS, 6:30 - basic, 7pm - Intermediate move
April 25th - WCS, 6:30 - basic, 7pm - Intermediate move

May is Country Two-Step - No dance on Mother's day May 9th

}}} Dance Tip of the week.

I have had a few discussions lately about dance music. Most always it
centers around Ballroom dancers and with what kind of music they are
comfortable. There are many Ballroom dancers who prefer music that is made
specifically for ballroom. This music is a cover of a popular song that is
recorded by a studio orchestra to a tempo that strictly adheres to what is
considered "good tempo" for a particular dance. We normally refer to this
as "Strict Tempo" music. I have a couple of these cd's and while some of
the music is quite good some is not. As a rule the music is very danceable
but also un-inspiring. On the other hand, if we are faced with an evening
of very inspiring, but not very danceable music we would quickly tire of
trying to figure out what dance to use. When choosing your music keep an
open mind and pick out music that will work well during different times of
the night or day. Music with a well defined beat and recognizable dance
rhythm is best used during or right after a lesson. It is designed to be
practice music

Another big difference between the two types of recordings is the length.
Strict Tempo music is recorded to a more consistent length than popular
music.

As a rule we try to avoid "Strict Tempo" music on Sunday because our dance
is not a practice party. Our Sunday dance is a social dance and we feel
that the popular music is more suited for a social party atmosphere.
Although an occasional goof is in order we try to pick out music that comes
close to a good dance tempo. Our music does vary in length but most songs
over four minutes are faded out.

Just as we ask dancers to learn several different dance styles we also ask
dancers keep an open mind about music. Your mood and needs may change from
day to day.

From Dave Moldover who hosts the very popular Mid Atlantic Dance Jam (Last
Weekend) comes this great links page with dance opportunities in DC and
beyond. I like this page because it is very organized and has a little more
information about the links than most.

OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton Roads, Yorktown, Gloucester, and Williamsburg) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater area dancers.  We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites.  To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz.  Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement.  Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page.  We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page.  Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event.  In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to http://www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails.  (Not just C&W. We'll  include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.)  We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason.  We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
